Prepping Your Car for Summer: Essential Maintenance Tips

Sweet, sweet summer. Hopefully, palm trees and a cool ocean breeze lie somewhere in your future, but no matter where the road takes you this season, these essential maintenance tips will keep your car in shape and your future bright.

Air Conditioning

Let’s not beat around the bush. Nothing will have you losing your cool like a busted air conditioner. Imagine piling into your vehicle for a long-planned summer road trip, only to have your system blasting out warm air, a legitimate nightmare scenario, especially if you have kids in tow.

Fortunately, there are quick fixes. The refrigerant (Freon) level may simply be low, or the car’s air filter may be old. High pollen counts during the summer can prove particularly painful for filters, so consider getting yours swapped out by a qualified professional before embarking on your well-earned summer vacation.

Wiper Blades

Sudden, fierce rainstorms are a part of summer life. They’re splendid for washing away pollen and giving your car a needed “glow up,” but torrential downpours pose a significant safety risk while traveling. Check both sides of your wiper blades before embarking on your big trip. Visible signs of wear and tear may necessitate a replacement.

Tire Pressure

Proper tire maintenance is important at all times of the year, but it’s critical during the summer months. The high temperatures of sweltering days cause air expansion in your tires, which may lead to improper inflation pressure and the risk of uneven wear and tear or even a blowout. Ensure your tire pressure is up to snuff by checking your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations. Most vehicles’ tire pressure is recommended to sit between 30 and 35 PSI (pounds per square inch), but always consult your car’s manual or a qualified professional.

Tire Alignment and Rotation

Never take any shortcuts with your tires. Ensuring proper inflation is a start, but it’s only the beginning when it comes to proper maintenance. Before hitting the beach with friends or Disney with the fam, pay close attention to your next drive to the supermarket. Suppose the steering wheel vibrates while driving or you feel a “pull” to either side of the road, even while attempting to remain perfectly centered. In that case, you’ll want to consider a tire alignment and/or rotation by a professional at your local dealership.

Brakes

Ideally, the good vibes and good times of summer won’t stop (until you go back to school or work, that is). But your car certainly needs to, and keeping your brakes in tip-top shape is one of the most critical aspects of vehicle safety. Sometimes, poor brake performance on the road may not be detectable, but early warning signs may be. Turn down the radio and listen for growling, squeaking, or squealing when testing your brakes. Also, check for any “pull” to either side of the road when applying your brakes. If you suspect issues, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with an expert for a full inspection of your brake system.

Park in the Shade

Always park your car in the summer shade whenever possible. It doesn’t just keep your interior cooler. The sun’s rays can legitimately damage the exterior paint and interior upholstery of your car, so you’ll want to seek shade whenever possible.
